Now, in keeping with the plan to add a little something extra to each episode of the highly-anticipated series, an extended trailer for season 3 has been released, offering a few more tantalizing seconds of the turmoil, foreboding and familial power wrangling that have made the series such a captivating spectacle from the get go.
The "extended" portion of the trailer is only about 25 seconds longer, but it does offer some interesting tidbits. Most notably, there's a brief back-and-forth between the ever-quarreling Lannister siblings, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Cersi (Lena Heady), as she reminds her brother he's not quite as clever as he thinks. Such diminished wit, Tyrion counters, is more than enough to get the better of his scheming sister. But that's only a portion of it; the extended trailer also provides a fleeting glance at Melisandre (Carice van Houten), as well as a few lines of inquisitive dialogue for the undercover Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and, curiously, a quick shot of a very large and menacing bear.
The most telling aspect of both trailers, however, seems to be several key shots that illustrate just how the series will continue to push the boundaries of the cinematic efforts of television. As noted in an interview with Jeff Goldsmith last year, Game of Thrones writer Vanessa Taylor mentioned that executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had planned to infuse the third season with a larger scope and more of a cinematic feel that will likely enhance the increased fantasy elements of the series.
Taylor said:
"All of the episodes of the third season seem to open with a particularly cinematic opening. And they're less about clever dialogue and transition and more about these huge cinematic...just the visuals of it all."
If watching characters scale enormous walls of ice in a raging blizzard or a dragon do a fly-by of a ship at sea is any indication, then season 3 will indeed have plenty of visually stimulating moments to captivate the audience.
As an added bonus, HBO has rolled out a series of character posters depicting the key players in the Lannister and Stark houses. And while Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson) and Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) didn't quite make it to the poster round-up, the network did provide a one-sheet for Sandor "The Hound" Clegane (Rory McCann) and the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).
